- Extends your Construction area.
Sends a Market cart to pick up Goods.
A Market building is a Trade building that allows you to claim additional land on an island. Market buildings don't need to be created within the Construction area of your settlement, but can be placed anywhere as long as at least one tile of its Influence area overlaps with your current Construction area. Land claimed by the Market building cannot be built on by other players.
The Market building has a number of Market carts available. The Market building will automatically send out Market carts to Production buildings within its Influence area that are connected to it by a road. Market carts are used to supply and pick up Goods. Once Goods have been picked up, they are automatically added to the island-wide storage. You do not need a road connection between Market buildings for resources to be shared between them.
Occidental Market building[]
The Occidental Market building has three tiers; Small market building, Medium market building, and Large market building, corresponding to Peasants, Citizens, and Patricians/Noblemen. The Small market building has access to one Market cart. The number of available Market carts increases by one at each tier.
- Increases the number of Market carts.
- Left-click to upgrade the Building.
In the original game, upgrading to the Medium market building does not increase island-wide Storage capacity. With the Venice add-on, this was changed to give +5 tons of island-wide Storage capacity for every Medium market building on an island.
- Increases the number of Market carts.
Increases Storage capacity. - Left-click to upgrade the Building.
The Large market building adds an additional +5 Tons of storage in both versions of the game.
Oriental Market building[]
- You need
Visitor from the Orient (Diplomatic rank)
to access this Building.
The Orient only has one level of Market building; The Oriental market building. The Oriental market building always has access to 3 Market carts and adds +5 tons of island-wide Storage capacity, which is the same as a Large market building. Compared the the Large market building, however, it is much cheaper to build and has a slightly lower maintenance cost. This generally makes it a better choice than the Large market building, though it does not have the flexibility of multiple tiers.

Strategy[]
In general, the Oriental market building is strictly preferred over the Large market building. In practice, however, it is often not necessary to upgrade beyond a Medium market building. The Market buildings in most advanced Producton layouts only service a small number of close-by Plants, which speeds up pickup times and reduces the need for a large number of Market carts. Outside of dedicated layouts, Cobblestone streets can be used to speed up the travel time as well, as well as simply building multiple Small market buildings. This means we don't use the full pickup range, but keeps the travel time short and is ultimately more efficient. Therefore, the additional Market carts provided by the Orienal market building are not needed in most cases.
